Automated Morning Brief

The first hour of every day goes to working out what changed overnight.

The systemA one-page brief before 9 am: what moved, what’s stuck and what needs your decision today.

// The problem

Six tabs before you know what needs you today.

Every morning starts the same way: open each tool, scroll back to last night, and piece together what changed. By the time you know what needs you, the first hour is gone.

  1. InboxWhat came in overnight, and what’s actually for me?
  2. CalendarWhat’s on today? Did anything move?
  3. Slack or TeamsWho tagged me? What happened in #ops?
  4. CRMDid any deal move, or go quiet?
  5. Ads managerDid spend run over while I slept?
  6. A notepadSo what actually needs me today?

By hand

Our morning brief

51 seconds
Pallav’s own morning brief, shown on camera. The 30–60 minutes is the manual version.

// How it works

It reads while you sleep. You wake up to one page.

The dial is the night, from when you log off at 7 pm to 7 am. Each ring is a tool it reads; each dot is something that happened. At 7:00 the hand stops and the brief is written.

Read-only. It never replies, accepts, posts or changes anything.

Sample brief, fictional company.

// Why it’s safe to run daily

It reads everything. It changes nothing.

The brief is the only thing it ever sends, and it only sends it to you. Every decision on the page stays yours.

What it reads

  • EmailRead-only
  • CalendarRead-only
  • Slack or TeamsChosen channels, read-only
  • CRMRead-only
  • Ad accountsReporting only

What it never does

  • Reply to or send any email
  • Accept, decline or move a meeting
  • Post or react in Slack or Teams
  • Change a deal, a contact or a stage
  • Pause, edit or fund an ad

What you tune

Plain-English rules, set once and changed whenever you like. For example:

  • Only mention deals over $25k
  • Flag ad spend 20% or more over plan
  • Skip newsletters and receipts
  • Anything from the board goes first
  • Count a thread as stuck after 6 hours with no owner
  1. Day 1

    Connect, read-only

Link email, calendar, chat, CRM and ad accounts with read-only access. Pick the channels it may read.

  2. Day 2

    Write the rules

Decide what counts as a decision, what counts as stuck, and what never makes the page. Set the format.

  3. Day 3

    Schedule and tune

Set the time, run it for a few mornings, and cut anything you skipped. Then it runs every day.

// For your tech lead

Can we build it? Here’s what it takes.

One of the quickest systems on this list to build. It only reads, so the access is simple and nothing it does reaches anyone else. Most of the work is deciding what deserves a line.

Tools you’ll use

Access it needs

  • Read-only access to your inbox, your calendar and the Slack or Teams channels you choose
  • Reporting access to the CRM and ad accounts, nothing that can edit
  • Permission to send one message: the brief, to you

Three ways to build it

  1. Start simple1 hour

A saved prompt in Claude with its Gmail, Calendar and Slack connectors switched on. You run it when you sit down.

  2. Production2–3 days

n8n runs at 7:00 am, reads the five sources since last night, has Claude sort everything into decide, stuck and moved, and emails you one page.

  3. Custom1–2 weeks

Remembers yesterday’s brief so stuck items show how long they’ve been stuck, adds a brief for each leader, and drops what you keep ignoring.

Guardrails

  • Read-only everywhere: it can’t reply, accept, post, change a deal or touch an ad
  • The only thing it sends is the brief, to you
  • Every line names its source, so you check before you act
  • You choose which inboxes and channels it reads; private messages stay out unless you add them
  • It lists the decisions. You make them.

What to measure

  • Minutes from sitting down to knowing your day
  • Lines you acted on vs. skipped
  • Things you missed that should have been in it
  • Mornings it arrived on time

Who builds and runs it

One person who is comfortable with n8n builds it in two to three days. After that, the leader who reads it owns it: a five-minute tweak each week to what deserves a line, and what doesn’t.
